The official mascots for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics were unveiled, The mascot for the Olympics is named Miraitowa, and the Paralympic mascot is Someity. The organising committee said 16,769 schools across the country took part in the ballot.
The name Miraitowa is a combination of the Japanese words future and eternity, Miraitowa is a figure with blue checkered patterns, old-fashioned traditional charm and new innovation. Its Paralympic counterpart’s name, Someity, (pronounced soh-may-tee), Someity is a figure with pink chequered patterns and cherry blossom flowers, originates from a popular cherry blossom variety “Someiyoshino” and echoes the English phrase “so mighty”.
